Penlee House Gallery and Museum is West Cornwall’s centre for art and heritage. It is an elegant gallery set within a Victorian house and park. Changing exhibitions mainly feature famous 'Newlyn School' and Lamorna Group artists (1880-1930). Newlyn School artists include Stanhope and Elizabeth Forbes, Walter Langley, Harold Harvey and Norman Garstin, while the Lamorna Group includes Laura Knight, 'Lamorna' Birch and Alfred Munnings.

The Gallery and Museum offers a wide range of educational support, offering free entry for all school visits and access to talks by curatorial staff. A schools loan service exists and a wide range of material is available including social history objects, photographs and archaeology. Specific worksheets and packs are produced in line with the exhibition programme.

In 2006, to celebrate and explore Brunel’s influence on the life and history of Cornwall, Penlee House created a new resource, Travelling to the Seaside by Train, aimed at schools’ Key Stage 1 area of Seaside Holidays in Cornwall.

The pack contains over 40 A4 colour and black & white images, all printed on high quality card; a teachers’ booklet with key background information; activity sheets, schemes of work, timeline and much more. In addition, there is a CD ROM which includes digital copies of all of the above, and a further selection of over 50 images to use in the classroom. These could be used in conjunction with PowerPoint, a whiteboard, or as printouts.

Due to the substantial funding that Penlee House received for this project, the pack is available from Penlee House at the subsidised price of just £5.00. The packs can be posted at a further cost of £7.50.
